Position Description

The Nurse Manager is responsible for the direct supervision of the nurses, medical assistants, and MAP Monitor and of the day-to-day workings in order to monitor and maintain all healthcare needs of children served in our programs. The nurse manager also provides direct nursing care.  The Nurse Manager works collaboratively with families, Residential staff, prescribers, clinicians, management and outside providers.

The Nurse Manager ensures all necessary policies, protocols and procedures are in place and effective; and will update these items when needed. The Nurse Manager is also responsible for overseeing the MAP Monitor/nurse Educator who provides ongoing quality assurance of the required Medication Administration Program (MAP) system to ensure compliance with DPH, DMH and DCF regulations, licensing requirements and MAP policies. The Nurse Manager is responsible to ensure the highest quality of care of the clients. 

Esential functions and qualifications include:

Administration/Duties:

  • Provide direct nursing care of clients
  • Develop, review, implement and update nursing policies and procedures
  • Oversee all health care, including but not limited to: medication administration, documenting medical orders, communicating with staff about concerning medical issues as well as open/ongoing communication with pharmacies regarding medical orders
  • Attend weekly meetings to communicate psychiatric/medical concerns to prescribers
  • Consult with and oversight of nursing services and staff nurse for two group homes in East Freetown; includes periodic visits to the program
  • Communicate and collaborate with other disciplines regarding children’s health issues
  • Schedule nursing shifts to ensure appropriate coverage at all times, including flexing own schedule
  • Approve staff payroll
  • Provide On-call Coverage; manage the on call nursing schedule

Personnel & Training:

  • Lead the hiring, training, discipline, and terminations of nursing staff
  • Evaluate staff through regular and documented supervision and performance evaluations; supervision of the MAP Monitor/Educator to include oversight of MAP policies and procedures
  • Present and train staff at monthly orientation including nursing department functions, medication administration information, and Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Develop and provide informational in-service training pertaining to medical/health issues as needed for Jamaica Plain and East Freetown campuses

Compliance & Assessment:

  • Ensure that the authorized prescriber’s orders are on site, current, and properly transcribed
  • Ensure that medications dispensed by the pharmacy correspond with those medications prescribed by the authorized prescriber
  • Ensure that all medication is being administered in accordance with the authorized prescriber’s written order
  • Ensure that medication is being properly procured and stored
  • Ensure nursing staff follow department policies and procedures
  • BSN and Current Massachusetts RN License required
  • 3 years pediatric/psychiatric experience and one year supervisory/administrative experience required
  • Commitment to highest quality of care
