Professional School Nurse

Gould Academy seeks a Professional School Nurse to join our busy student health center for the school year. This is a full time, exempt, 10 month position. This role reports to the Director of Health Services and on a team of other nurses, mental health counselors, and an administrative assistant.

Job Summary 

As a member of the Health Services Department, the Professional School Nurse is a registered professional nurse, who works to strengthen and facilitate the educational process through improving and protecting the health status of children within the school setting.  The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems for day and boarding adolescent students. 

Relationships

This position reports to the Director of Health Services and works closely with students, faculty, and parents, independent and contracted providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities for the Professional School Nurse 

 

  • Provides 24-hour nursing coverage within a rotating schedule as planned by the Director
  • The Professional School Nurse is expected to provide care during daily Health Center hours as scheduled, as well as rotation of on-call time on evenings and weekends. The nurse on-call must stay within a reasonable distance(not more than 20 minutes) of the school and be available by the Health Center on-call phone to best provide for the needs of the students
  • Provide health assessments. Identifies health findings, which do not fall within the normal range, and connects to additional medical resources as needed
  • Develops and implements a health plan:
    • Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow-through
    • Provides ongoing health information to students, parents, school personnel and health agencies
    • Utilizes evidence-based practice to provide appropriate education and care of students
  • Maintains, updates, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate the individual needs of students via electronic medical records and hard copy
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality
  • Participates as the health specialist on the faculty Advising/Counseling Team as appropriate, or needed to fill in for Director of Health Services
  • Attends faculty meetings as applicable
  • Interprets school health services to school personnel
  • Evaluates students for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases
  • Co-ordinates school health activities and serve as a liaison person between the home, school, and community
  • Safely implements the school medication policy and procedure, including coordination and oversight for unlicensed assistive personnel medication administration.
  • Works to prepare necessary health records, first aid kits, and medications for four-point experiences, on-snow sports, and any other off-campus trips
  • Helps students and parents accept responsibility for medical diagnosis and treatment
  • Serves as a health liaison between school, home, and the community working closely with other medical providers to include dentists, chiropractors, counselors, physicians, hospital staff, etc.
  • Collaborates with Athletic Trainer on concussion management
  • Emergency equipment supply and maintenance (AEDs, epi-pens, dorm kits)
  • Tracks student immunization status and TB screening for compliance with State and Gould Academy standards, offering yearly influenza clinic
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions

Qualification Requirements

  • Possession of a current license to practice professional nursing in Maine
  • Three to five years’ experience as a professional registered nurse
  • A minimal of a baccalaureate degree in nursing is required
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize workload
  • A positive and warm bedside manner, with strong interpersonal skills
  • A desire to engage fully in residential life
  • Computer literacy and ability to navigate electronic medical records
  • Current certification in CPR
  • Possess a valid drivers license and successfully pass a criminal and sexual offender background check by obtaining CHRC clear status from the Maine Department of Education
  • Condition of employment pursuant to Gould’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, all faculty and staff will be required to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must request an exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief

Physical Work Environment

These physical requirements are not exhaustive and additional job-related physical requirements may be added to these by individuals on an as-needed basis.  Corrective devices may be used to meet physical requirements.

  • It is essential to be able to meet the physical demands of sitting for prolonged periods of time at a desk or computer workstation, using repetitive arm, hand and finger movements  
  • Continuous use of fine motor skills such as push/pull and to grasp objects/paper
  • Must be able to occasionally lift 10-15 lbs., maximum lifting/carrying of 35 lbs
  • Ability to frequently bend, stand, stoop, walk,  and sit
  • Occasionally this position will be kneeling, squatting, climbing and driving a motor vehicle
  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a semi-open office setting with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions  
  • Ability to visit and move around on and off-campus and must be able to travel to all campus locations and to appropriate training and/or meetings as required
  • This position may occasionally stay overnight in the school infirmary

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, 10 month, exempt position beginning in January 2023 or as soon as possible.
